In 1999 I left Holland for a working holiday in Australia. For a whole year I traveled around one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Since I still have so many pictures and memories that I would love to share I have decided to take trips down memory lane and tell you a little bit about it.
One of the most interesting experiences I have had in Australia was when I camped in The Grampians (Victoria). The Grampians is Victoria’s largest National Park, comprising of outstanding landforms, dense rain forests, unsurpassed mountain peaks, sparkling waterfalls and superb lookouts.
Camping in The Grampians was very primitive as you can see on the picture. We slept in a big tent with other travelers and were eating food that was cooked above a fire. I am the one with the green shirt and orange Dr. Martens. At night time I was so scared that some of Australia’s wonderful (and not so wonderful) wildlife would get into our tent. But fortunately that didn’t happen, I did however got bitten by lots of mosquitoes.

One of the downsides of camping there was that they did not have any toilets or any electricity. If you had to go to the loo you could find yourself a tree. Yuck!!! It made me realize how spoiled with luxury we are these days. Despite not having a toilet or shower, there were certainly some good things. I went on beautiful bush walks even though I was a bit scared to get lost. At night time we would take a mud bath and sit in some sort of sweat tent (primitive sauna) to jump in the lake afterward and clean ourselves up. In the lake on the picture below we bathed ourselves. Isn’t the view amazing?
